OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Setting our own environmental targets
To us, environmental protection and innovation go hand in hand.
We work throughout the design of our buildings and global operations to improve our own environmental footprint and minimize our impact on the environment.
We have set our environmental targets in line with the global ISO 14001 standards for environmental management. We carefully monitor what we do and make sure we are putting our targets into practice, wherever we work throughout the world.
We also require our partners to protect the environment so that we can meet our commitment throughout the entire value-added chain.
ENVRIONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTS AND TECHNOLOGIES
Environmental awareness starts from the moment we research our products and carries on throughout their development.
All our designs for new products take into account the use of resources and emissions during their entire life cycle, as well as during their development.
We’re improving resource and energy efficiency, we’re increasing the service life of our products and we’re using components and packaging from recyclable materials.
We also help to recycle our products. For instance, our customers in the EU can return old Hilti tools and appliances free of charge to our Hilti Stores, so we can recycle or dispose of them safely.
We also use life cycle assessment (LCA), to evaluate the environmental compatibility of what we do. This covers the whole environmental impact of our products from raw material extraction to production, use and recycling. All of this information can also help our customers to improve their own eco-balance.
GREEN BUILDING
Technologies for green and sustainable building
We want to support green building, helping our customers to achieve eco friendly builds.
And to help, we can provide environmentally related data for our products, to show how they will contribute to any green build.
This can all help to bring down CO2 emissions and the use of energy, water and materials, as well as helping to reduce health hazards and the risk of environmental pollution.
We make sure that our technologies are eco friendly, designed and made to help achieve international green building standards, such as BREEAM, HQE, DGNB and LEED.
For instance, we have created products that reduce the amount of volatile organic carbons in the air, such as our firestop systems and chemical anchors. And we’ve designed an award winning hammer drill, which greatly reduces its environmental impact because it creates no waste when it is made.
In addition our Clean-Tec product range goes above and beyond these regular requirements.
MAKING OUR OWN BUILDINGS AND TRANSPORT ECO FRIENDLY
But we also live the standards we strive to achieve for our customers.
We are constantly looking at how we can be more eco friendly and reduce our own CO2 emissions, energy and water consumption throughout our factories, plants, offices and transport.
And we are getting there. Here are some examples of what we’ve done:
- Austria: Thüringen manufacturing plant
Around 80 percent of the electricity used in our production, logistics and administration areas comes from renewable energy sources: water power, wind power and biomass systems. - Germany: Hilti Headquarters
All heating energy is now drawn from a communal biomass power plant nearby and we’ve installed 60 solar panels on the roof of our restaurant building. - Liechtenstein: Nendeln logistics center and Schaan offices
We use geothermal energy for heating and cooling and are now able to recover about 70 percent of waste heat from the ventilation systems. We have also installed large solar panels.
